The Zoning Commission generally meets as needed at the Township Service Complex, 1554 Columbus Rd, Granville.  The Zoning Commission has determined their meeting schedule will be the 1st and 3rd Monday’s of each month.  Meetings will be listed on the Township’s website under news.

Township Zoning Commission

The Township Zoning Commission has the following duties:

  1. Initiate proposed amendments to the Township Zoning Resolution.

  2. Consider and review all proposed amendments to the Township Zoning Resolution and make recommendations to the Board of Township Trustees.

  3. Review all Planned Unit Developments and make recommendations to the Board of Township Trustees.

The Township Zoning Commission meets on an ad hoc basis, the time and place of which are published in either the Granville Sentinel or the Newark Advocate.

The Board of Zoning Appeals

The powers of the Board of Zoning Appeals are very similar to those of the courts. Under the Ohio Revised Code, the Board of Zoning Appeals is given three basic powers:

  1. To hear and decide appeals.

  2. To grant variances.

  3. To grant conditional use permits.

Appeals and variances go to the Board of Zoning Appeals only after an applicant is refused a zoning permit by the zoning inspector or deputy zoning inspector. The Board of Zoning Appeals receives applications for conditional use permits for its consideration.

The only recourse to a decision by the Board of Zoning Appeals is to the courts and not the legislative authority [the Township Trustees] as set forth in the Ohio Revised Code.

The Board of Zoning Appeals meets on an ad hoc basis, the time and place of which are published in either the Granville Sentinel or the Newark Advocate.

 Commonly Asked Questions

Q. How do I get a Zoning (Building) Permit?
A. Download the form HERE or contact our Zoning Inspector, Travis Binckley, at (740) 587-0229. If no answer, leave both a daytime and evening number to obtain a return telephone call. Mr. Binckley can also be reached via email at zoning@granvilletownship.org

Q. Is a Zoning Permit required for construction/installation of a storage shed?
A. Yes. Contact our Zoning Inspector.

Q. Is a Zoning Permit required for a swimming pool?
A. Yes. Contact our Zoning Inspector.

Q. Is a Zoning Permit required for installation of a fence?
A. No. Granville Township has no provision for regulation of fences in its zoning resolution. Before property owners construct fences the following is recommended:

  1. Know where your property line is located based on a survey. Do not speculate. Do not go on the old fence line which may not be the property line.

  2. A fence must be maintained on both sides. Do not place a fence directly on the property line as you must then trespass on your neighbors property to service the fence and possibly mow the grass on the other side.

  3. If installing barbed wire and electric fence, research the state laws controlling the installation and use of such fencing.
